God’s Laws Are Walls

A Wall On Our Compound Keeping Us Away From Crocodiles And Hippos

I will always be grateful for the almost thirty years God gave us in Nigeria. There are many reasons for my gratitude, but one of the most important is the powerful, blessed influence both American and Nigerian Christians had on my life throughout that time. So many true Saints lived out their lives around me faithfully and lovingly–showing me the way to grow in service to Christ, encouraging and admonishing me to grow, sometimes cajoling, occasionally giving me a much-needed kick-in-the-pants–always pointing me toward God’s best for me. Today I am thinking about one particular Nigerian family who worked as a unit to serve God by joining forcefully the biggest battles Nigerian youth were facing at that time. This family fought with strength and courage, assisting the youth to find God’s best in the midst of much temptation and confusion regarding how they could honor God in the difficult choices they made day-to-day. The mother and wife in this family became a counselor to me in the midst of challenging times at the school I served. She had the habit of coming into my office with a smile on her face; then delivering a clear word from God, always Biblical, always Spirit-led as she helped me to find courage for difficult decisions and God’s correction when I was slipping into some cultural or spiritual mistake. One of God’s clearest lessons she taught me during this fulfilling yet challenging time, was this: God’s laws are walls. They are meant to protect us from harm that comes our way when we make foolish and disobedient decisions to join society in trying out new ways that do not conform to God’s Good Will for us. God always wants our best. We can trust His law. When we obey Him, we find the best. When we disobey we move beyond His protection and experience the consequences. God’s laws are a clear demonstration of His love.

God’s Laws Are Walls

God`s laws are walls
Protecting us
From every sin
The enemy
Uses to destroy

God’s Son is love
Urging us to
Live our lives safe
Within the law
Of love dying
For us.

God’s Spirit speaks
Reminding us
To trust the walls
And recognize
Their benefit
For Him
Securing us.

 God Builds Me A Wall

God builds me a wall
Extensive and tall
Protecting my heart,
My mind and my soul
From enemy darts
Seeking my life
Desiring my all.

Jesus has come
My teacher and friend
Giving His life
Atoning for sin
Defeating the fiend
Who only speaks lies
Destroying our lives.

Holy Spirit in me
Strengthens God’s Wall
Reviving in me
His mercy and grace
Speaking as Jesus
His wonderful Truth
Setting me free.

Matthew 7: 24-27

“Everyone then who hears these words of mind and does them
will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
And the rain fell, and the floods came,
and the winds beat on that house, but it did not fall,
because it had been founded on the rock.
And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them
will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.
And the rain fell, and the floods came,
and the winds blew and beat against the house, and great was the fall of it.”
