You won’t hear many graduation speeches these days about the need for acquiescence–it’s one of those words that raises hackles in most of us, but recently I read something that Amy Carmichael said that really challenged me…
Joy is perfect acquiescence—
acceptance, rest—in God’s will.
I know that throughout history God has repeatedly demonstrated that He will never attempt to enslave us. He will never force us to accept His will, for He is a God of Love who comes seeking us, who saves us through the Cross, who shepherds us through the abiding presence of His Spirit. So, acquiescence to His Will is a very different matter than surrendering to the evil in this world that tries to crush the very spirit in us God nourishes. Perfect obedience to Him is an acceptance of the best and a rejection of the worst. In my many years of teaching I have observed over and over again how the brightest of students (not always those who are most popular or even most accomplished in the eyes of other students and their teachers) shine brighter and brighter still when they discover the path of acquiescence, or obedience to Him and all the gifts He has to give. In such students I see an eagerness for learning, for loving and blessing others that leads them to shine with His glory, illuminating the lives of their families, their friends, their teachers and all others who are touched by Him through their lives.
Acquiescence seems to me
Unnatural because it is
So spiritual and not at all
The way of the world if you want
To get ahead and have your own way—
It is like a tiny seedling
Accepting just a tiny space
In the shadows of the forest
For decades growing gradually
Into a majestic, towering
Testimony to faithfulness

Obedience is a beautiful thing
When it is rooted deep within my heart
And glorifies my Master’s way bursting
Forth in praise for Him and joy all around.
Obedience makes a task a wondrous,
Holy, awesome testimony to Him
Who is the planner, builder and fulfiller
For establishing new Jerusalem.
Obedience teaches my heart to dance,
Floods my soul with heavenly light, stretches
My mind beyond all selfishness toward
My God, my Savior, Guide and humankind.

He humbled Himself by becoming obedient
to the point of death–even death on a cross.
