Oh, I Want To Be Like Jesus

During my three-and-a-half decades of missions service in Africa, I have had confirmed in my heart, day-after-day and year-after-year that for bringing people to Jesus, there is nothing more powerful than showing them the unique beauty of Jesus and His life, His love, His power and His reality. The challenge comes in helping individuals and groups find in their hearts and minds the touch points where He connects so that they can appreciate the urgency of their finding Him and everything He offers. It’s scary, but it’s true–they often make these connections best if they somehow discover His reality in me. It’s scary because I am such a poor mirror to reflect His glory. It’s possible because He lives in me and continues to clean me up and shine me so that He becomes clear enough to reveal a glory that alone can transform a life for eternity. So, I have written the prayer below, realizing that I need to be like Jesus (through His intervention) in offering His grace, His joy, His peace and His love. Then, those all around me, have a real opportunity to discover Him, who alone can save them.

Oh, I Want To Be Like Jesus

Oh, I want to be like Jesus
As His grace abounds in me
For seeking those who wander
Lonely roads, lost and all alone.

Oh, I want to be like Jesus
As His joy abounds in me
For encouraging those who suffer
Pain and doubts and misery.

Oh, I want to be like Jesus
As His peace abounds in me
For reconciling those who battle
Too many giants and enemies.

Oh, I want to be like Jesus
As His love abounds in me
For embracing those without hope,
Lest they die in misery.

Acts 4: 8-13

Then Peter, filled with the Hold Spirit, said to them,
“Rulers of the people and elders
if f we are being examined today concerning a good deed done
to a crippled man,
by what means this man has been healed,
let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that
by the name of Jesus of Nazareth,
whom God raised from the dead–
by him this man is standing before you well.
This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders,
which has become the cornerstone.
And there is salvation in no one else,
for there is no other name under heaven given among men
by which we must be saved.”
Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John,
and perceived that they were uneducated common men,
they were astonished.
And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.
