A Child In All The Right Ways

“Make me like a child in all the right ways.”

Patton Dodd

That God has given me a wonderful career as a missionary teacher is one of His most amazing gifts in my life. The privilege of being among children and teens all of these years in Africa has blessed me beyond description. Their joy in life has provided me with energy when I was wilting. Their willingness to try new things has dared me to continue experiencing and learning new things and new ways in God’s beautiful world. Their welcoming personalities have set an example for me to go beyond friendships and projects that seem comfortable to me as I experience the freshness and goodness of expanding my understanding of Him and His perfect way. Their enthusiasm as a game or task begins has pushed me to trust in Him and depend on Him as He leads me to have an explorer’s attitude. Most of all, in so many of their hearts, I have discovered a precious, a simple, an undiluted love for Him in all of His Ways as they get to know Him. I have much to praise Him for over these blessings as I recall our decades in Africa. One of the most delightful is the privilege of spending so much of my time among His dearly beloved children. In many ways they have been my mentors in making me more and more, in God’s Kingdom, “. . . a child in all the right ways.”

Wide open wonder-filled eyes
Overflowing with excitement
And smiles that illuminate
Even hearts tending toward darkness;
Supernatural acceptance
Of one and all without prejudice,
Enthusiastic about playing
With every child they encounter;
Eager to explore the world right
There beside them for they know
The universe is teeming with
Adventures in their own backyard;
Giggling and chuckling and laughing
Often, running until they’re
Out-of-breath, falling on the ground
And stretching out in the grass
Gazing at the clouds above
Imagining goodness unshadowed
Bursting into dreamy songs of
Praise for the good God who loves them.

Matthew 18: 1-4
At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying,
“Who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”
And calling to him a child,
he put him in the midst of them and said,
“Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like little children,
you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest
in the kingdom of heaven.”
